Story

An eerie shadow creeps over the once-peaceful school.

“Something is wrong at school” Mischievous pranks filled with malice and hatred seem to have gone rampant in what was once a peaceful academy. Just as our hero began to have a feeling of discomfort, zombies attacked the classroom. Zombies who are invisible to classmates engage in a fight with our hero. “Am I delusional?” With doubt in his mind, cold stares from his classmates and feeling evilness from the teacher, he continues to fight as he won’t allow the heroine to get harmed by these soul eating creatures. The heroine feels something about him. And soon other classmates who feel sympathy for him begin to appear. What are the zombies? Who is the mastermind? Will the hero be able to get the peaceful academy back?

Overview

Youth Zombies is a school-life tower defense game with the sensibility of manga and light novels, for both iPhone and Android. It turns the classic classroom daydream — “zombies attack the school and I protect the heroine” — into a game.

World

Youth Zombies are born when the longing of grown-up graduates for their school days takes on a personality, fed by a peculiar energy that, for geographical reasons, fills the school.
Every human also has an “astral body” — a counterpart to their physical self, with special abilities to match.
To protect the classmates whose souls the zombies are stealing, the hero has to fight entirely on his own.

Manga

Youth Zombies makes heavy use of manga. The relationships between the characters and the backstory are told in detail through manga sequences inserted throughout the game.

It gets fun once you understand the system. I was playing thinking the characters didn't get very strong even when I leveled them up, but if you look closely there's Ascension, and doing it makes characters a lot stronger and really helps you clear stages. As for experience, the first-clear bonus is pretty big, but early on, grinding around 3rd or 4th period is time-efficient, and it might be a good idea to read the tutorial a few times while you're at it. I'm still partway through, but the game balance is really well done, willpower recovers quickly, and there's none of that feeling of being made to play that a lot of other games have. It takes chuunibyou as its theme, tells the story through manga, and the gameplay does a great job of capturing how busy you are fighting off zombies in the middle of class. You don't have to play it hardcore, you can chip away at it bit by bit in your spare time, so as a smartphone game it's personally pretty much the ideal design. I'd even like other games to take a page from it.
